10 Foods to Prevent Seizures
A seizure is a surge of uncontrolled electrical activity in the cells, nerves, or neurons of the brain that can cause short-lived abnormalities in movement and muscle tone (i.e., twitching, stiffness, or limpness). Certain conditions like too much glucose in the brain, epilepsy, or drug abuse can lead to seizures.
Even patients taking doctor-prescribed medications may need to also make dietary changes that will reduce or eliminate seizures. The following foods have been known to have a positive effect on the nervous system and lower the incidence of seizures
1. Ketogenic-friendly foods
The ketogenic, or keto, diet consists of high-fat foods as well as foods that are filled with protein. You’ll consume very few carbohydrates if you follow this diet. This makes it easier for your body to enter a state of ketosis. This process prompts the cells to use substances called ketones for energy. Ketones are broken down from fats, as opposed to glucose, which comes from a breakdown of carbohydrates. This diet may be particularly effective for children who have seizures, but it can be beneficial for adults as well. In addition to high-fat foods, small portions of cheese, fish, meat, and fruit are also allowed in the keto diet. It is important to reduce sugar while on this diet as well, to avoid reversing the diet’s positive effects
2. Modified Atkins-friendly foods
The Atkins diet is an alternative to the keto diet and is also high in fat. However, the Atkins diet doesn’t have as many restrictions, and you can include some bread products as long as you stay below the daily carbohydrate count. A diet filled with protein and fat and lower in carbs can reduce the likelihood of seizures
3. Bacon
Meat is filled with protein, which is essential for the health of red blood cells and for providing nutrition to the brain. Eating meaty foods, such as bacon, can keep the brain from having seizures
4. Eggs
This high-protein food contains omega fatty acids and lutein, which protects the eyes. Eating eggs often can reduce or prevent seizures as part of a healthy diet
5. Mayonnaise
Mayo is often used as a condiment for sandwiches and can be included in a number of recipes, whether you’re preparing a cake or a casserole. This food is high in fat and can help support nerve and brain health
6. Butter
This is a fatty food that is often used to season food and prepare baked goods. The fat in this food provides the body and brain with more energy and can feed the cells, reducing the chance of seizures
7. Oil
Oils are high in fat; you can also find fat in nuts and seeds. Fat makes it easier to absorb the nutrients in food and helps to keep the body warm. Fats are also used to provide the body with energy and promote the health of the body’s cells
8. Lean meats
Meat contains proteins that help promote proper enzyme balance in the body. Lean meat is also protein-rich and contains B vitamins that can strengthen the immune system. A diet that is high in protein can help people manage or reduce seizures over time
9. High-fiber vegetables
Vegetables provide a number of vitamins and minerals that protect the cells and prevent infection and disease. Filling your diet with vegetables that are high in fiber, such as cabbage, carrots, or broccoli, can protect your brain and body
10. Cheese
This food contains proteins that your body needs to support your muscles, your hormones, and your immune system. Cheeses, as well as milk, yogurt, and other dairy products, can provide the brain with the necessary protein to keep seizures at bay
Seizures can also alter a person’s sense of awareness and change their behavior and sensory function. While not all seizures occur the same way or have the same effects, seizures do have a significant impact on the nervous system. If you suffer a seizure, please consult with your doctor immediately.
